Mere Hall has an absolute commitment to place the building and its facilities at the disposal of uses which benefit the local community. The Hall provides a uniquely stylish and historic venue for a wide range
of community events and enterprises. Please read on to find out about just some of the events we are currently involved in.

Networking with a difference

When we first got together with Bolton Community Network, we never imagined what we were letting ourselves in for. We wanted to provide a means whereby volunteers and workers from Voluntary and Community groups could get together and share ideas, good practice and look at opportunities for joint working. What we didn’t realise was how much fun networking could be!

“Networking” is one of those things that gets bandied about and which in
truth, is seldom done with any real success – until “Getting to Know You….” became a regular feature on the Mere Hall calendar
The first thing we did was to explore what networking was all about.
Those folks who attended the initial workshops helped us explore examples
of good and bad practice, as well as ideas for networking events. This lead
to a whole host of events, beginning with an excellent Master Class on how
to network, lead by Kay Gregson from Bolton & Bury Chamber.

The philosophy right from the start has been that networking should be fun
and those who regularly attend will know that no two events are ever the same. Highlights of the year have been the Summer Garden Party; Herb
Potting (thanks to the Gathering of Organic Growers), Silk Screen Printing
and our Christmas Special – the pantomime with a message – “Voluntasia” !

We have just begun planning for 2004 and its looking like we will be travelling the world this year for our themes – watch this space.

Shakespeare and all that...

Mere Hall, we have always felt, would be an idea setting for theatrical
events. In the spring of 2003 we engaged Mike Coyne from Mimesis
Theatre Company to work on our first pilot scheme. The end result was a wonderful production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night – set in and around
the Hall and the park and performed in promenade style. Not only did the
play receive critical acclaim, but it was also a huge success as a community event.

Thanks to Mike’s ingenuity, we were able to bring together professional
actors, amateur actors as well as community group members who
produced banners for sets and art work for an exhibition, which
accompanied the plays.
